3. Commission a Land or Seascape

Hi there!  Thank you for considering a commissioned painting of your favorite land or seascape.  I would love to collaborate with you to create a unique painting for you, or as a gift.  My style is “painterly realism” which means my work is a blend between realism (photographic looking) and impressionistic (very loose brush strokes).  Your painting will look like the person's face and/or hands, but you will see brush strokes of luminous color.  I think that makes a painting interesting and look like a painting, not a photo - which is the point, after all!  I use lots of fun colors in my work with blue and purple shadows and never black from a tube.  Did you know that you can create black by mixing percentages of blue, crimson, green and a touch of umber together?  The resulting color is much richer than "tube" black and you can see some of the colors that were blended to create it.  This is one of the extra steps I go through to create my artwork.   I work with high quality oil paint and materials and can paint the edges of the canvas, so it may be displayed framed or unframed.  Framing is not included.

The Commission Process:

Email me a large, high-resolution jpeg photo of the landscape.  If you don't have a favorite photo already and will be taking one for this process, morning and evening light is best, not high noon.  Shadows and highlights make the painting interesting.  You might also consider where you will hang the painting.  If you have chosen a rectangular canvas size, would it be better hung vertically or horizontally.  That might help determine which photo you choose.   I will contact you so we can collaborate on size of canvas, anything you want cropped out, colors to highlight or avoid, etc.

Once we agree on all the details, I request a 50%, non-refundable deposit by either check (preferred) or paypal, and I will give you an estimated completion date.  I will send you a photo of the toned canvas with the painting sketched out for approval.  Once the painting is finished, I will email you a digital photo of it, just to make sure you're delighted with the result.  I will cheerfully tweak until you are satisfied.  Once approved, I request that you send the final payment.

The commission process in picture format:

I received a photo of the Sonoran Desert:

After chatting about cropping some of the vegetation out, etc., I created a sketch on a toned canvas and sent it for approval:

After seeing the painting close to being finished, I was asked to add a few elements and tweak the color of the sky.  Cheerfully done, and we have a happy customer:

Your unique painting will take at least a week to dry enough to lightly spray with retouch varnish and safely ship.  The varnish will enhance the colors of the dry paint and help protect your painting.  I then carefully wrap it and send it to its new home.

Pricing:

Pricing will be dependent on the complexity of the subject matter.  More elaborate backgrounds will add to the cost of the painting. Packing and shipping starts at $10 and Florida sales tax is 7%.  If you have specific requests for shipping, I will try to accommodate you. If you have purchased one of my paintings, or commissioned one in the past, I am delighted to give you a 10% discount on all future paintings in appreciation for your patronage!

Canvas Sizes:

You have a choice between "traditional" (3/4" or 7/8” thick) or "gallery profile" (1 1/2" thick) canvases.  Not all canvas sizes are available in both styles. More sizes may be available upon request.  If you are planning on framing your painting, a traditional canvas should be chosen. The gallery profile has a more contemporary look when hung unframed.  I paint the edges on all of my paintings so they may be hung framed or unframed.  If you prefer, the edges may be left white or painted a solid black, brown, etc.  Framing is not included.
